Welcome to Brampton. Getting set up with health care is one of the first things to do after you arrive, and it is easier than it looks.
Step 1: Apply for your Ontario health card
Your Ontario health card gives you access to OHIP, the province's health insurance. It covers family doctor visits, walk-in visits, hospital care and many tests.
Apply in person at a ServiceOntario centre. You will need three original documents:
- Proof of citizenship or immigration status, such as a passport, permanent resident card or work permit.
- Proof of Ontario residence, such as a lease, a utility bill or a bank statement with your Ontario address.
- Proof of identity, with your name and signature.
ServiceOntario will confirm which documents you need and when your coverage begins. You can check the current list on ontario.ca/page/apply-ohip-and-get-health-card.
If you moved from another Canadian province, your old province's coverage usually continues for a short time. Check with your previous province before you move.
Step 2: Find a family doctor
- Apply directly to clinics accepting patients. Kennedy Medical Centre is accepting new patients of all ages. Apply online and our staff will call you within 48 hours.
- Register with Health Care Connect by calling 811 or online. You need a valid Ontario health card.
- Search the CPSO doctor directory for doctors near you.

Step 3: Get care while you wait
- Use a walk-in clinic. KMC's walk-in hours.
- Call Health811 at 811 for nurse advice in many languages.
- Ask a pharmacist about minor ailments.
- For emergencies, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
Bring your records with you
If you have medical records, vaccine records or a list of medications from your previous country or province, bring them to your first visit. They help your new doctor understand your history. Translations are helpful but not required.
